How to Change the PHP Version

You can change the PHP version your website uses yourself from your panel. Newer PHP versions are both faster and more secure. PHP 8.1 or higher is recommended for WordPress.

Changing the PHP version in Plesk

  1. Log in to Plesk and go to Websites & Domains.
  2. Click the PHP (or PHP Settings) link under your domain.
  3. Select the version you want from the PHP version list.
  4. Click Apply or OK.

Changing the PHP version in cPanel

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Open Software > MultiPHP Manager (or Select PHP Version).
  3. Tick your domain, choose the PHP version from the list on the right and click Apply.

Changing PHP settings

On the same screens (in cPanel, MultiPHP INI Editor) you can change frequently needed settings:

  • memory_limit: memory PHP may use (256M is recommended for WordPress)
  • upload_max_filesize and post_max_size: largest file size that can be uploaded
  • max_execution_time: maximum run time of a request (seconds)

Before changing the version

  • Back up your site.
  • Old themes and plugins may cause errors on a new PHP version. Update them first.
  • If the site does not open after the change, you can switch back to the old version; changes take effect immediately.
