How Do I Back Up and Restore My Website?

Regular backups let you restore your site within minutes after an error, an attack or a bad update. Always take a backup before a major update or change.

Backing up in Plesk

  1. Log in to Plesk and go to Websites & Domains > Backup Manager.
  2. Click Back Up.
  3. Choose what to back up (website files, databases, e-mail) and click OK.
  4. You can select the backup in the list and download it to your computer.

Restoring: In Backup Manager, click the backup, choose the items to restore and click Restore. You can add a backup from your computer with Upload.

Automatic backups: Use Backup Manager > Schedule to set up daily or weekly automatic backups.

Backing up in cPanel

  1. Log in to cPanel and open Files > Backup (or Backup Wizard).
  2. Download all your files with Download a Home Directory Backup and your databases with Download a MySQL Database Backup.
  3. To restore, upload the backup file in the Restore section of the same page.

If your account has JetBackup, you can restore files, databases or e-mail from the daily backups kept on the server with one click.

Important tips

  • Keep your backups not only on the server but also on your computer or in cloud storage.
  • Large backups can fill your disk quota. Delete old backups regularly.
  • Test now and then that your backup really works.
  • For WordPress sites, plugins such as UpdraftPlus can send backups directly to Google Drive or Dropbox.
