Your hosting plan has two separate storage limits: disk space and inodes. When either one is full, new files cannot be uploaded, e-mails do not arrive and the site may start showing errors.
What is disk quota?
The total space for your website files, databases, e-mails and backups (for example 5 GB).
What is an inode?
An inode is the number of files and folders in your account. Every file, every folder and every e-mail counts as one inode. Many very small files (cache files, session files, thousands of e-mails) can fill the inode limit even if the disk is not full.
Where can I see my usage?
- Plesk: the Statistics section or the Disk space indicator on the domain page
- cPanel: Disk Usage and File Usage (inodes) in the Statistics panel on the right. For details, see Files > Disk Usage.
To free up space
- E-mail: Clean up old e-mails with large attachments, and the Trash and Spam folders. E-mail usually takes the most space.
- Backups: Download old backup files (.zip, .tar.gz, .sql) piling up in the panel or site folder to your computer and delete them from the server.
- Cache: Clear the cache plugin's folder (
wp-content/cache). - Log files: Delete large
error_logfiles. - WordPress: Delete unused themes, plugins and unneeded images in the media library.
Still not enough?
If your site has grown, you can easily move to a plan with more disk space from your client area. The amount you pay is calculated based on the remaining period.
